Well, the topic of Liverpool injuries cropped up again on Tuesday night after Jurgen Klopp lost another player to a fitness-related problem.

Joe Gomez went off injured during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s last night.

After the game, Klopp admitted that the player was still in pain and journalist James Pearce revealed on social media that the former Charlton Athletic defender was spotted leaving the stadium on crutches, and in a protective boot.

Adam Lallana, who played with the 24-year-old at Anfield, said it was ‘absolutely tragic‘ if Gomez was set for another spell on the sidelines.

And that’s particularly true when you consider Joel Matip’s comments about his teammate last week.

Matip revealed that of all the Liverpool players, it’s Gomez who spends the most time in the gym.

The Cameroonian powerhouse said: “This would probably be Joe Gomez, you can see it in his arms, he always keeps an eye on his fitness, so yeah.”

So for the England international to suffer an injury which jeopardises his participation in the Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 28, despite being an ever-present in the gym, well it’s honestly heartbreaking.

It’s also devastating because remember, Gomez, who joined Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers in 2015, has had a number of long-term injuries already in his career on Merseyside.

According to Transfermarkt, he has missed 804 days of active duty with the Reds due to injury, which is well over two full years.

And unfortunately, now it looks like he might be set for yet another stint out of the squad.

Even if it’s only a short-term absence this time, he’ll want to help Liverpool – who have Mohamed Salah sidelined at the moment, too – to a potential quadruple, with only the Premier League and Champions League left to win, but it seems probable that he’ll be limited in doing that.
