Houston Astros pitcher Jake Odorizzi suffered a bizarre injury during their clash with the Boston Red Sox, but what happened to him? What is the latest update?

The Astros were on their first visit to Fenway Park in the opening game of the series, with starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi performing well.

32-year-old right-hander Odorizzi had recorded two runs through the first five innings and the fifth petered out to a close.

However, after pitching, he attempted to field to first base, before falling to the Fenway ground.

What happened to Jake Odorizzi?

After leaving the mound to get to first base, Jake Odorizzi fell to the ground and lay on his back – it not being immediately clear what had happened to the pitcher.

He indicated that something had happened in his left leg – having pushed off the mound with a quick twist after he had finished pitching.

The medical teams came onto the field – and Astros pitcher Odorizzi was carried off the field of play.

The Astros described what had happened to Jake Odorizzi as a “lower leg discomfort,” while he was evaluated.

Coach Dusty Baker said that Odorizzi was going to be sent for an MRI scan and he was wearing a protective boot on his left foot.

How it impacted the game

At the end of the fifth innings, the Red Sox were leading 2-1 when Odorizzi suffered his injury.

When the game resumed, the Red Sox extended their lead to 6-3 by the close to record the win.

It means that after the first game in the series, the Red Sox are now 14-21 for the season, with the 2021 World Series runners-up Astros 23-13.

The next game is set for Tuesday 17th May, with the third on Wednesday 18th.

After that, the Astros head back to Minute Maid Park for series against the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Guardians.

The Red Sox are next scheduled to play the Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox.
