Tottenham star tops most Prem POTM wins as Ronaldo scoops April award

Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed a second Premier League Player of the Month award for the season, but who has won it the most as the Manchester United star takes it for April 2022?

The Portuguese icon topped an eight-man shortlist for his gong, having produced a goal-laden month at Old Trafford. Ronaldo hit home five goals across four appearances, thanks to a hat-trick to beat Norwich 3-2 before slotting home once against Arsenal and Chelsea.

His effort at home to the Blues on April 28 sealed a 1-1 draw for Ralf Rangnick’s side after trailing for only two minutes. While Ronaldo’s strike at the Emirates Stadium handed the Red Devils hope of mounting a comeback two minutes after falling to two goals behind.

Cristiano Ronaldo wins April 2022 Premier League Player of the Month award

Ronaldo moved onto 17 goals for the season across 28 appearances after scoring against Chelsea. He had also only scored four – including a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur – across his previous 10 top-flight outings prior to the 37-year-old netting against Norwich.

Manchester City stars Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus, Tottenham ace Son Heung-Min, Liverpool conductor Thiago Alcantara, Burnley defender Nathan Collins, Brighton winger Leandro Trossard and Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes were also up for the award.

Ronaldo follows Tottenham striker Harry Kane in winning the Premier League Player of the Month award for March 2022. Michail Antonio, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Raheem Sterling, David De Gea and Joel Matip have also scooped the gong this season.

The April award marks Ronaldo’s second of the season following his success in September after returning to the Premier League from Juventus in August for £13m. It is also his sixth win of all-time. So, who has won the Premier League Player of the Month award the most?

Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane share most Premier League Player of the Month awards

Kane claimed his seventh Premier League Player of the Month award when the Tottenham forward won it in March 2022. The gong moved the England captain level with Manchester City icon Sergio Aguero for the most successes since it was first awarded in August 1994.

Jurgen Klinsmann was the maiden recipient during his time at Spurs, who have won it the fourth-most as a club. Manchester United stars have received the most titles with 42 from 21 players, ahead of Liverpool (32 from 17), Arsenal (30 from 20) and Spurs (24 from 14).

Kane earned the gong for the first time in January 2015 and claimed a double with the title in February. His next successes followed in March 2016, then in February, September and December 2017. The striker had to wait until March 2022 to receive his seventh and latest.

As for Aguero, the Argentine scooped his maiden title in October 2013 before a year-long wait until November 2014. He added further titles in January and April 2016, January 2018, February 2019 and his last success followed in January 2020 to move to the top of the tree.

Cristiano Ronaldo moves level with Steven Gerrard for third-most POTM wins

Ronaldo’s POTM award for April 2022 moved the Manchester United forward level with Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard in third-place. Both have won six titles, although Gerrard shared his for March 2014 with Luis Suarez whilst the pair were teammates at Anfield.

The shared title would be Gerrard’s final gong before leaving Merseyside for LA Galaxy in July 2015. The now-Aston Villa manager won his first Premier League Player of the Month award in March 2001, before March 2003, December 2004, April 2006 and in March 2009.

All six of Ronaldo’s gongs have been claimed alone, with his first coming in November and December 2006. He later scooped further titles in January and March 2008 during his first career spell at Old Trafford after joining from Sporting Lisbon for £12.25m in August 2003.

Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie share fifth-most Player of the Month awards

Fifth-place for the most Premier League Player of the Month awards is shared among two former Manchester United strikers. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie scooped the title on six occasions during their careers, which also featured Everton and Arsenal respectively.

Rooney did not secure a gong until his £27m move to Old Trafford from Goodison Park in August 2004. He secured the title in February 2005, before further wins in that December, March 2006, October 2007 and lastly in January 2010 as the first player to win five awards.

Meanwhile, Van Persie sealed a debut title with Arsenal in November 2005 before further awards in north London in October 2009 and October 2011. He added two more with the Red Devils in December 2012 and April 2013 after making a £24m transfer in August 2012.

Eight players so far share seventh-place for the most Premier League Player of the Month awards won on four titles. Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, Alan Shearer, along with three stars still active in Salah, Jamie Vardy and Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes set a record in December 2020 by winning the gong for the fourth time in one calendar year. He had also scooped the title that February, June and November following a £47m transfer from Sporting Lisbon, worth up to £68m, during the January 2020 window.
