Despite a knock against Chelsea, Brazil international Raphinha started and finished Sunday’s game – in which Brighton scored first. A lovely finish from Danny Welbeck, out-muscling Diego Llorente to chip Illan Meslier.
But Leeds were much improved, perhaps helped by the fact they did not get a red card – unlike their previous two games. They tested Brighton star Robert Sanchez on numerous occasions, until the injury-time equaliser.
Joe Gelhardt controlled a neat pass from Llorente before rounding two Brighton players. His cross was headed in by Struijk, sending Elland Road ballistic. An emotional moment, and a huge one in the relegation fight.
A goal and a result made all the better, after Everton suffered defeat to Brentford and Burnley lost to Tottenham. Buchan shared a picture of Raphinha and Phillips well after full-time, perhaps a hint at a future exit.
Raphinha and Phillips share Leeds moment: Both gone this summer?
If Leeds go down, there is no doubt that both players will request an exit given they are crucial parts of both the England, and Brazil side. Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, they need Premier League football.
If Leeds stay up, then it is more complicated. Raphinha is a target for Barcelona, and more recently Newcastle. Regardless of relegation, Raphinha is likely to move on in the coming weeks.
That could affect the future of Phillips. If Raphinha goes, Leeds may feel that they have to keep Phillips. The player himself, Leeds through and through, may want to end his Leeds career on a better note.
