After a series of leaks last month, it has finally been officially confirmed that the hit anime series Fire Force will return with season 3.

In the wonderful world of anime, the global community love nothing more than liking, sharing and discussing the latest theories and leaks about their favourite series.

The conversation surrounding leaks is focused on social media, specifically Twitter, where both real spoilers and fake news can spread rapidly to fans around the world.

Last month, a popular leaker claimed that the Fire Force anime was once again in production, information that has thankfully now been confirmed by the Japanese production company behind the series.

Fire Force season 3 officially confirmed

On May 17th, it was finally confirmed that Fire Force season 3 was on the way. The series’ Japanese Twitter page announced the fantastic news alongside the domestic website that a third season was “now in production.”

However, fans of the anime series had already been confident that this announcement was on the horizon for some time thanks to various leaks last month.

On April 29th, popular and typically-reputable Twitter leaker and insider SugoiLITE shared a post claiming that “‘Fire Force’ (Enen no Shouboutai) TV Anime Season 3 [is] in production.”

The good news was that Fire Force’s return was all-but guaranteed anyway because anime renewals tend to depend on two factors; popularity and source material.

It’s pretty obvious that Fire Force is an incredibly popular series with fans, but don’t just take our word for it. Fire Force is scoring a 7.6/10 on IMDB, 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and 4.1/5 on Crunchyroll, with ratings of 7.69/10 and 7.78/10 on MyAnimeList for both seasons respectively – with a combined 890,000 reviews.

Despite these figures having very little relevance to the Japanese performance, arguably a more important factor in renewals than international success, they do indicate that Fire Force was undoubtedly popular enough to merit a third anime season.

Then we have source material, of which there is enough to produce a third season of the anime. As reported by Anime Geek (formerly Monsters & Critics), the anime adapted up until around volume 20 chapter 174 from the original manga.

The good news is that a total of 304 chapters across 34 volumes have been published in Japan, with the series reaching its climax earlier this year after a fantastic six years of serialisation.

As each season of Fire Force has adapted roughly 10 volumes of the manga, there is enough source material available to the production team for at least one more full season of the anime, potentially two if manga content can be stretched out.

Fire Force season 3 release date predictions

Whilst fans were delighted with news that the anime will return for another lit adventure, a release date for Fire Force season 3 was sadly not revealed. However, we can make some predictions based on the production of previous seasons and the schedule for David Productions, the studio behind Fire Force.

Season 1 was announced in November 2018 and premiered in July 2019, with season 2 being revealed in December 2019 and debuting in July 2020 – a 7 to 8 month-long animation period.

Based on this production cycle, many fans may have expected the anime to return in April 2022 as part of the Spring broadcasting slate. However, the lack of official news concerning season 3 will have likely been due to the work schedule at David Production.

Since the second season of Fire Force concluded in 2020, the studio has been busy working on Strike Witches: Road to Berlin, 2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team and Cells at Work!!.

However, the studio is now working on a 52-episode adaptation of the Urusei Yatsura series, which is set for a four-cour broadcast later this year. Under the assumption that this series is the primary focus for David Production, for the time being, fans can expect Fire Force season 3 to debut in either October 2022 (optimistic) or more likely, January 2023.

Where to read the original manga in English

If you can’t possibly wait for Fire Force season 3 to be announced, why not pick up the original manga series by Atsushi Ohkubo?

The series has released 26 of the 34 total volumes in English so far with Penguin Random House, with the next instalments launching on the following dates:

  • Volume 27: June 21st, 2022
  • Volume 28: August 16th, 2022
  • Volume 29: October 18th, 2022

Fans can acquire physical copies of the Fire Force manga series online directly through Penguin Random House as well as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books a Million, Bookshop, Hudson Booksellers, IndieBound, Powell’s, Target and Walmart.

Fire Force mobile game announced

Alongside news of Fire Force season 3 going into production, it was announced that a new mobile game was also in development.

Details on the new game understandably remain scarce at this early stage, with the post only titling the game as “Fire Force Flame Dance.”

Per the new Japanese website for the upcoming title, Fire Force Flame Dance will be an RPG-style game with Item-based play fee, noting here that this is “free to play basically.”
