What date and time will the hit Hindi-language movie The Kashmir Files release for OTT streaming around the world via the ZEE5 platform?

This week, fans will finally get the opportunity to stream the hit Hindi-language movie The Kashmir Files, a drama film from Vivek Agnihotri, starring the likes of Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi in the leading roles.

The movie is a fictional retelling of the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from the Kashmir region of India and follows a young college student as he researches his family’s experiences during the exodus, themed here as genocide.

The plot switches between two timelines from 2020 when the student is investigating his heritage and thirty years prior when his family experienced horrific treatment during the conflict. As noted in the YouTube trailer caption, “32 years later, the emotions & the pain remain the same. Witness the brutally honest story of the Kashmir Genocide.”

The Kashmir Files: OTT streaming release date and time

As confirmed by the ZEE5 network via The Hindu, The Kashmir Files is set to release on Friday, May 13th, 2022.

A specific launch time for the OTT streaming of the hit movie has not been officially confirmed, but ZEE5 typically release new content from 12 AM IST.

Fans should note that when content is set to release at a time other than midnight IST, this information is shared by the network prior to launch day – indicating a midnight premiere is the most likely scenario for The Kashmir Files.

Speaking to The Hindu, lead actor Anupam Kher noted that the OTT streaming release of The Kashmir Files was as equally important as its highly-successful theatrical run.

“‘The Kashmir Files’ is a depiction of an incident that happened with our people, years ago and is still not known to so many… The film received appreciation from all over the nation and now for those who couldn’t watch it on the big screen, The Kashmir Files will be available on ZEE5 across the world.” – Anupam Kher, via The Hindu.

The Kashmir Files looks to cash in after theatrical run

The Kashmir Files was originally meant to premiere in January 2022 to coincide with Republic Day, but was postponed because of the rise in Omicron variant COVID-19 cases. The movie was finally released in theatres across the country on March 11th, 2022, to an incredible reception from fans.

In fact, just five days after its premiere, the number of theatres screening The Kashmir Files rose from 630 to an outstanding 4,000. This translated into box office success for the film, which earned Rs 339.78 Crore (US $45 million), making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022 so far!

However, critics were significantly divided about the merits of The Kashmir Files, with the majority of reviews from major outlets being highly critical of the movie. The Indian Express gave it a 1.5/5, with scores of 1/5 on Rolling Stone India and The New Indian Express, rising to 3/5 on The Times of India and Pinkvilla respectively.

Despite the negative response from critics, fan-based aggregate sites are much more positive; The Kashmir Files is currently scoring an 8.3/10 on IMDB and 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
