Jamie Carragher has named Liverpool’s Joel Matip in his Team of the Year

Alisson in goal, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk in defence, Mohamed Salah in attack – Carragher paid tribute to Liverpool with his selections.

Carragher and Neville only disagreed over four spots; right back, one centre back, left back and one midfielder.

Carragher went with Joel Matip as his second centre back, partnering Van Dijk in his back line.

Neville went with Ruben Dias and Carragher explained his pick of Matip over the Manchester City star.

Carragher told Sky Sports that he feels Matip has been ‘fantastic’ this season, arguably just as good as the more-hyped Van Dijk.

Carragher praised Matip as ‘outstanding’ whilst hailing both his defensive ability and his quality on the ball.

“He’s been fantastic,” said Carragher. “He’s been as good as Virgil van Dijk this season, he’s been outstanding, he really has. I think Matip this season, his ability to come out with the ball as well, the defensive record alongside Virgil van Dijk is outstanding,” he added.

Matip has never really received the plaudits he has deserved at Liverpool.

Signed on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016, Matip has proven to be one of the finest Liverpool bargains of the Jurgen Klopp era.

The Cameroonian ace has endured some injury problems but has never let Liverpool down when on the pitch.

Matip certainly deserves this kind of recognition and could even end the campaign with two more trophies having played a key role this season.
