Cody Gakpo has had quite the season for PSV Eindhoven, and now, he has won the Eredivisie’s Golden Shoe award, given to the best player in the division.

The winger beat out some stern opposition for this award including Manchester United target Jurrien Timber and Ajax stars Sebastien Haller and Dusan Tadic.

Gakpo is certainly worthy of this award this term. Yes, his side didn’t win the league, but on a personal level, he enjoyed an incredible campaign.

In just 22 starts, Gakpo netted 12 goals and grabbed 13 assists in what was a breakout campaign for the 23-year-old.

Gakpo may be this year’s winner, but he’s unlikely to repeat the trick this time next year.

Indeed, the Dutchman is reportedly set to leave PSV this summer, and a move to Arsenal has been heavily touted.

In fact, according to Dutch journalist Marco Timmer, Arsenal are in pole position to sign the winger this summer.

“An intermediate step on his way to the absolute top of European football seems to be his preference,” Timmer said.

“At the moment, Arsenal are in pole position, but nothing is definitive.

“PSV are aiming for at least forty million euros (around £33m).”

Signing the Eredivisie Player of the Year could be a shrewd move by Arsenal, but as recent history has shown, it could also backfire.

While the likes of Luis Suarez, Jan Vertonghen and Georginio Wijnaldum have gone on to be stars after winning this award, players such as Afonso Alves and Karim El Ahmadi have struggled after winning this prize.

Arsenal may want to tread carefully when making their move for Gakpo, especially if the £33m reported fee is accurate.
