Alan Shearer has hailed Newcastle United after they seemingly ended Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League this season.

This always looked like a tricky game for Arsenal in their pursuit of fourth place.

Newcastle have been resurgent under Eddie Howe and there was something of a celebratory atmosphere for their final home game of the season.

Ben White’s own goal set Newcastle on their way before former Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes arrived to sweep home the second.

A 2-0 defeat for Arsenal leaves them two points behind Tottenham Hotspur with just one game to play.

It looks like Arsenal are going to miss out on Champions League football – not that Newcastle care.

Newcastle looked dead and buried at one point this season – now they’re potentially set for a top-half finish.

Eddie Howe has turned the club around brilliantly and the January outlay on signings like Bruno Guimaraes has worked well.

Newcastle should have a very bright future ahead of them now and what looked like a difficult season has ended on a high.

You can expect to see Newcastle make a number of signings and possibly take another step forward next season.

Pundit and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was absolutely delighted with the performance from his boyhood club.

Shearer took to Twitter to call the display ‘fantastic’, adding that the Newcastle fans were ‘amazing’ and that St James’ Park is ‘brilliant’.

Shearer also added praise for striker Callum Wilson.

Wilson, returning from injury late in the season, was a constant nuisance against Arsenal.

Wilson forced White’s own goal for the opener and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself.

Shearer offered just two words on Wilson’s display, simply saying ‘outstanding tonight’ – praise that will mean a lot to a Newcastle striker having come from Shearer.
