£268,000-a-week player says he rejected Liverpool

Chelsea forward Timo Werner has told The London Evening Standard that he turned down the chance to move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Werner has added that he is not disappointed at his decision to snub a potential Liverpool transfer, as he won the Champions League with Chelsea last season.

As reported by The London Evening Standard, Liverpool were leading the race for the Germany international forward in the summer of 2020, but Werner moved to Chelsea instead.

Chelsea paid RB Leipzig £45 million for the 26-year-old, who is on £268,000-a-week salary (SalarySport).

Werner told The London Evening Standard: “The only thing I can say is they have a German manager.

“I have known him for many years before, because when I was in Stuttgart, he talked about going to Dortmund. Then I played not so well, so it was done.

“When I was in Leipzig, I had the possibility to come to the Premier League. Liverpool were also in my thoughts and were a big possibility for me, but at the end I decided for Chelsea and I won the Champions League title last year. It was not the worst decision.”

What could have been…

In our opinion, it would have been better for Werner had he moved to Liverpool, not Chelsea, back in the summer of 2020.

Yes, Werner won the Champions League last season, but you have to say that the forward has not had the best of times at Stamford Bridge.

The forward was a goal machine at RB Leipzig, scoring 93 goals and giving 40 assists in 157 appearances for the German club.

Werner has scored only 10 goals in 56 Premier League appearances for Chelsea so far.

The German would have fitted in nicely at Liverpool under Klopp with his movement and eye for goal, and could have formed a strong three-pronged attack with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
